This web site is about "Boosra Mahin", who was the first Thai to visit Germany with his group of musicians to perform Siamese music. His orchestra performed at the Berlin Zoo and recorded many brown Edison wax cylinders in 1900.

The stories of..."WAX CYLINDER"

Have you ever known?
In 1886, the wax cylinder was introduced by Bell and Tainter
(who would eventually become the Columbia company).
And in late 1886 Thomas Edison introduced his own wax cylinder.
The war between the phonograph companies began.
Many of the earliest brown wax recordings were made on an individual basis,
but here is where many of the future stars of the recording industry got their start.
In this facinating period of the industry there were no rules,
just new ideas to be discovered.

How to make the blank wax?
The origin of records
Take a close look at what you listen to...it might spring from some unsuspected beginnings.

Stearin, the rendered fat of cud chewing animals, was the primary ingredient of early records.
Here is an 1896 recipe:
Stearic acid, 48%
Sodium stearate, 20.2%
Aluminum sterate, 11.3%
Ceresin, 20.5%
Other waxes poured in the brew included at times
carnauba, whale wax, beeswax, and ozocerite.
One reason Edison switched in 1889 from a metal to a jeweled stylus was
because the stearic acid in the records rusted the metal point.
The wax was roasted in 900 pound pots where it was heated up to 480 degrees farenheit.
The hotter the wax, the browner the record.
Record making could be dangerous. An 1889 explosion while stirring the vat
left Edison swathed in bandages for weeks.
Edison’s wax was the best in the industry.
Columbia bought Edison’s wax masters until he cut off the supply in the late 1890s,
and Eldridge Johnson liked Edison’s wax so much
he melted down old Edison cylinders in his early disc recording experiments.
Early records were recorded one by one, but by 1892 records were pantographed,
as many as 30 copies per master.
By 1898 Edison and Columbia were making their masters on 5" wax or metal drums.

How to record on the blank wax?
To record an early phonograph record,
performers would stand in front of a funnel-shaped horn
attached to a phonograph and belt out their songs.
High volume was needed to make the recording diaphragm vibrate
enough to force the stylus to carve the blank wax cylinder.

How to handle the wax?

Handle by inserting middle and index fingers in the center hole,
then gently spread them to just keep the cylinder from slipping off.
Do not touch the grooves of wax cylinders; they are very susceptible to mold.
Wax cylinders should be at room temperature before touching;
the thermal shock from the warmth of your hand can cause cold wax cylinders to split.
